SCOOP: Is MUMBO-JUMBO next big dining mecca?

Wed April 1 2009 2:44:00 ET

Attention NYC food hipsters. No need to wait for next Wednesday’s edition of the Times to hear about the latest chic chow spot. Frank Bruni, the ninny, left a copy of his April 8 column on the A train, and it found its way to DREGS...

DINING OUT

Today, we explore the newest acronymous NYC neighborhood of MUMBO-JUMBO—Mainly Under the Manhattan Bridge Offramp, Just Under the Manhattan Bridge Offramp. This area is unique in that it includes both Manhattan and Brooklyn. There are 5.5 buildings in this locale and a population of about 75 (though it changes daily).

There are some great dining options in this little 'hood, like Big Al's on the Manhattan side. Al grills any food you bring over his dramatic oil can grill. Best options are burgers or dogs but if you want to bring a steak or something from one of the many Chinese markets nearby, go ahead. The meats take on the complexity of the sneakers, cardboard and old clothing Al uses for fuel. And you can BYOB (but expect to share, so bring lots of plastic glasses). Al isn't always free (not in jail), so you can check his schedule at www.bigalcooks.com.

Over in Brooklyn, locals have glommed on to the Deserted Truck. It is located with a primo view of the traffic right under the arch of the Bridge. Get there early for the best spot in the truck, though diners spill out al fresco onto the concrete.

No food is served, but you can pick up take-out at JL's Convenience store not far from the Deserted Truck. We dined on a JL tuna on rye, Fritos and a Bud Lite. Yummy! Unlike other "truck" venues, the Deserted Truck does not change location (no engine or tires). It should be there a few more months given the back ups at the police tow pound.
